Longline Fishing Fleet Threatens Endangered Sea Turtles. Facing new restrictions in the waters of Hawai'i, a fleet of longline fishing vessels are relocating to California. The longline fleet fishes primarily for tuna and swordfish but its fishing methods are highly destructive to endangered sea turtles and other marine life. In response, the Turtle Island Restoration Network and the Center for Biological Diversity working with attorneys from Earthjustice Environmental Law Clinic filed suit in the US District Court here today asking the National Marine Fisheries Service to help enforce the Endangered Species Act and protect the sea turtles.
