Channel Islands Sanctuary Update

2002.11.05 . .

This just in from Sherry Flumerfelt by way of Ocean Conservancy...

On October 23, 2002, the California Fish and Game Commission voted to adopt the preferred alternative network of marine reserves in the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. Thanks in part to your help, the largest scientifically-designed network of marine reserves in the United States was adopted to protect biodiversity and help rebuild and conserve fish and wildlife in the Sanctuary. This action, part of a joint state / federal effort, should ultimately protect 25% of the Sanctuary's waters as no-take marine reserves. With your help we have succeeded in fully protecting 175 square miles of the Channel Islands.
