How old are coral reefs?

2002.12.05 . .

Coral reefs are one of the oldest ecosystems on earth. They have existed for more than 450 million years although in the ancient past it was first the blue green algae and later the sponges, not corals, which were the major reef builders. Nevertheless, modern fossil corals are believed to have existed for a staggering 195 million years. The Great Barrier Reef is a relative youngster - it began to develop only 18 million years ago and much of the Great Barrier Reef is less than one million years old.
