Creative Commons One Year Anniversary Party
Last night I went to the Creative Commons Anniversary party in San Francisco with my buddy Vann. I'm so glad I went! We got there just before the speakers started up. There were hundreds of people, mostly dressed in black for some reason, free drinks and grub, and a groovin' dj.
We grabbed a drink, had a seat in the front row on some cushy bean bags and enjoyed the line-up. I sat right in front of Joi Ito and had the best seat in the house as far as I'm concerned.
The highlight of the evening for me was meeting and talking with Christopher Lydon after the event. I got to tell him how much I enjoy his radio blogging and told him a little bit about my work for The Coral Reef Alliance. Chris emceed the event and of course did a fabulous job.
Chris also did the narration for CC's new flash (7MB Flash Link) which you'll be seeing lots of this year, I predict. Creative Commons is taking off like a rocket and I'm proud to be a part of it. I'm quite pleased that the number one focus for CC this year is to make sure it's an international phenomenon. In other words, this is not an American ideal, it's a global ideal, created for creators.
Lawrence Lessig spoke about the history of CC. He told a passionate story about lawyers coming together in a chat room, learning how to talk with each other, instead of bark at each other, and eventually creating poetry together. It was a wonderful speech and I think you had to be there to fully understand what he meant by telling all of us this story but I hope you get the gist.
I'm sure you'll find plenty of other bloggers talking about this event and posting photos so do a search and check it out. I feel like I was making history last night. I'm so inspired.
